A giant smiley face made of trees appears every fall on a hillside in Oregon, near the town of Willamina. The face was planted in 2010 by a pair of foresters who worked for the lumber company. They used a clever mix of larch trees, which turn yellow or orange in autumn, and Douglas fir trees, which stay green year-round.

Now each fall, as the larches change color, the smiley face appears like clockwork. It’s become a seasonal roadside attraction & a feel-good symbol.
