I always prefer traditional animation but, let's be honest, it's not profitable nowadays with this culture of ''more products in less time''. And I animate, it would be crazy for me to just use paper.
Or even just qualify some work basing on the style or if it's traditional or not.
Does that mean that my animations/drawings aren't good because they aren't traditional? No?
I don't get the people that claims that ALL cartoons nowadays are shitty because they are digital.
Now, there aren't shitty cartoons? Yes, some cartoons are shitty.
But saying that a cartoon is shitty JUST because they aren't traditional and that ALL old cartoons were masterpieces just because they were traditional... It's just weird for me. Because, boy, there were shitty cartoons back then.
@S_mommo I think that maybe they might prefer it, and you do tend to notice less 'animation errors' in traditional mediums, but again 'NOTICE'. Its also slightly less likely to make those errors simply because of how tediously methodical traditional animation could be. Personally I see merit in all forms of mediums for the craft but I can easily play Devil's Advocate.
I don't know, I guess it kinda pisses me off the ol' ''old times were better times'' and the fact that I hate generalizations. I guess they talk from a nostalgic point of view, but I always try to put aside emotions when criticizing a movie, although I understand not everyone can do this.
Also, you can enjoy a medium and still acknowledging its errors, because I saw a lot of people literally not enjoying anything just because it's not perfect and they shame others.
@S_mommo Mind if I ask about the film in question? Also I agree, if you're going to remain objective its a good idea to take a step back and set preference aside to look at a film or show and its merits and flaws will stand or fall on their own. Obviously its almost impossible to avoid comparison to other things in the medium, but again I try to set that preference side off to the side until later.
I mostly was talking about some shows that I enjoy, in general. Enjoying doesn't mean it's like some sort of masterpiece, but I always feel suspicious about saying that I enjoy it because people will start call me problematic or dumb (like I'm not a real animator): Hazbin Hotel universe, Ducktales reboot, certain games in the Sonic fandom. It's the main reason that I made a separate account for Sonic stuff.
Those are just examples.
@S_mommo I see, yeah unfortunately some people didn't get the memo about things like Hazbin Hotel. Those types of people I feel need a few more brain cells before they can rub them together for warmth. That said, the animation was very impressive for an independent (non-studio) work.
Btw, sorry if I came off as aggressive or something. I really don't like to voice opinions on the Internet and I try to concentrate on posting art, but sometimes you need to speak your mind. Specially when people judge your competence basing on likes.
Ps: my all times masterpieces aren't any of those I mentioned, but people assumes it. Someday I wanna elaborate on why I consider them masterpieces. When I get the enough courage to do story times on speedpaints.
@S_mommo Nah, not aggressive so much as frustrated I think, but I'm not too good at the whole empathy thing in general. Still I AM curious about what you consider your all time masterpieces, they can tell you a lot about someone, including things like what they look for when analyzing something or just watching something for enjoyment.
