@xiaod1 @ToonLink @Lust3D I heard an interesting idea recently, which is both scary and tempting at the same time: Turning #Facebook and #Twitter into public utilities ran by the state.

On the upside, this would likely mean less #censorship over political matters. On the downside, it would probably mean Victorian puritans imposing new #porn bans and attacks on #NSFW to "protect the children" (from imaginary dangers) and whatever else lies in their heads.

@ToonLink @Lust3D Technically true: I'm FAR more scared of the #government passing #censorship into law... such as their attempted attack on #encryption with the #EARNIT act, not to mention #SESTA / #FOSTA which hasn't been overturned even now!

Still don't underestimate the power #Google #Facebook #Twitter and the rest of #bigtech wield! Especially when they act as one entity in applying a command, as they did for banning #Trump at the signal of his opponents.

@Lust3D Agreed. People nowadays are blinded and don't care about concept any more: All they care for is "we're doing it to them so it's okay", not thinking it will be done to others (including their selves) later on.

This is especially scary as #socialmedia proved it acts as one entity: #Facebook #Twitter #Google and all others can and will simultaneously #ban someone on command, as proven in the case of #Trump (whether people like him or not).

@Lust3D I love when people remember the 'punk' in [X]punk. :D I like solarpunk, but cyberpunk is important and relevant especially now and I think they can work side by side.

@Lust3D Hahaha that's true! I think that's why so many companies try to force you to use apps instead of the web interface, too. More control, more dependency, more prevention from using ad-blockers. XD

Yeah, that's true. I remember being so excited about their broadband internet project all those years ago, but nowadays such a thing chills me to the core, haha. They abandoned their "don't be evil" mantra early on, and it's a real shame. Paypal has too much control, too, and Patreon and Ko-fi, that affects people's livelihoods. Too many bad anti-competition practices.

@Lust3D It's not really censorship for a private company to enforce their Terms of Service that everyone agrees to when they sign up, or for them to not want to associate with groups that could be a danger to their business.

It IS a problem that two or three megacorporations are allowed to control a vast swath of the internet and telecommunications, however.

Some megacorps need to be broken up and their reach reined in a little.
